The Glass Harvest

Each year after the Perseids, the people of San Isidro walk out into the Atacama with buckets. The shower leaves glass in the sand that glows violet at dusk, and tourists pay well for a fallen star in a jar.

Lucía, a young geologist, comes to prove that the glass is ordinary silica and that the town is running a very charming scam. Her first three tests agree with her. The fourth one shows that the shards remember where they fell, and after that the question stops being about geology and starts being about what else is under the dunes, and how long the harvest has really been going on.
