Static Bloom
In a snowbound forest, flowers begin to grow out of television static, and the engineer sent to shut the transmitter down starts to recognise the pictures.
SwedenA transmitter deep in the northern forest is sending a frequency nobody programmed. Karin, a signal engineer for the national broadcaster, is told to drive up and switch it off. Two days, she is told. Three at most.
What she finds at the station: television sets half-buried in snow, screens full of static, and out of each screen a flower that has no business surviving the winter.
The signal responds to her voice. Not immediately, and not in words. First it steadies. Then it begins to show her images from her own childhood, ones she has never described to anyone, filmed from angles that nobody was standing at.
A slow, cold piece of science fiction about grief and the strange persistence of the past, which keeps transmitting whether or not there is anybody left to receive it.
