Midnight in Kyiv

Nine hours without power. The building on Reitarska Street has gone quiet and cold, and Daryna, a conservatory student, takes her violin down to the courtyard mostly to keep her hands warm.

The neighbours come down one at a time, with candles, phone torches, blankets. An old engineer requests a waltz. A soldier on leave asks for something his mother used to like, and then cannot remember the name of it, and hums four notes until she finds it. A child falls asleep on the steps.

For one hour the street is a concert hall. Then the lights come back on, which is the worst possible thing that could happen, and everyone goes back upstairs.
