Before he stood behind a camera he studied the exact sciences, then philosophy, and it never left his frames: his films ask not what the world looks like, but how a person is supposed to live in it. Six decades of work, dozens of films, awards at the biggest festivals in Europe, and generations of directors he taught that a camera is an instrument for thinking. He still shoots, he still teaches, and in the argument about artificial intelligence he takes the side of questions, not forecasts. We reveal who he is before the festival.
