The Carpet Weaver's Code
Six years on one carpet. Her grandchildren think it is just her work. It is not.
Maryam has been weaving the same carpet in Isfahan for six years. Her grandchildren are scattered across three continents and ring on Fridays, and all of them assume the carpet is simply what she does now.
Leila comes home to help her finish the last row. It is meant to take a fortnight.
On the third day, somewhere in the border pattern, she notices a date. Her mother's. Then another date that should not be next to it. The longer she looks, the more the field of the carpet stops being decoration and starts being a text: names, years, a marriage nobody mentions, a decision taken in 1979 that the family has organised itself around ever since without ever once saying it out loud.
Maryam keeps weaving while her granddaughter reads. She has had six years to decide whether she wanted anyone to work it out, and she chose a language that only someone willing to sit down beside her for a fortnight could possibly learn.
