The Bin Chicken

The Australian ibis has lost much of its natural habitat and now survives in urban environments, feeding on food scraps and rubbish left behind by people. Known less by its real name than by the nickname “bin chicken,” it is mocked, chased away, and pushed to the margins.

The Bin Chicken follows one ibis as it turns away from a life that is familiar yet degrading and begins to choose its own path. Will it risk an unfamiliar world, or return to the comfort of a life built on scraps and survival? At this crossroads, the ibis moves through danger and conflict in search of a different way of living.

The film also reveals the violence and contradictions of a human-centered order that uses and discards nature at will, through both the ibis—forced to survive in a transformed environment—and the fox, once introduced from Britain for hunting sport and now marked for extermination.

Blending satire with humour, the film explores the freedom and transformation that begin when a life refuses the path imposed on it and chooses its own direction instead.
