Saltwater Country
The sea is moving inland faster than the maps can be redrawn, and the rangers are the ones who have to say so.
AustraliaAlong the coast of Arnhem Land the saltwater is pushing into freshwater country. Swamps turn brackish, sacred sites go under, and the maps stop matching the ground.
The film follows ranger Jarrah and her young team through one season on patrol: burn-offs, weed surveys, a drone that will not calibrate, and long arguments in the cab of a troop carrier about which part of the coast to fight for when there is not enough season to fight for all of it.
Ancestral knowledge and satellite data end up in the same notebook, mostly because there is no time for a debate about whose knowledge it is. What the film is finally about is responsibility: what you owe a place that is itself changing, and how you keep belonging to it while it moves.
